Year after year, parents spend hundreds of dollars of investment in the state of the art technologies to limit and control what their children watch on television. With the advent of satellite TV, and control devices of parents have become more important. More and more channels are available, many of them children less than user-friendly content. That said, the control technology of parents today is better than ever. When combined with rating systems television, protecting children from potentially harmful content is easier than ever.
However, the tons of inappropriate content to manage to slip through each and every day. And the sources of these contents are often the most innocent of all. The number one culprit? The news. The next time you tune to a news channel like CNN or even its nightlife news in HDTV, take time to observe what is being shown and said – and how this might affect their children.
The news today for entertaining. Such intentions are often at the cost of filing respectable and responsible reporting of the content.
Despite the fact that the economy is in shambles, the country is conducting two wars and care health is in grave crisis, our news often focuses on the most frivolous. The battle between Jon and Kate Gosselin, the state of the relationship between Justin Timberlake and Jessica Beal, the tragic last days of Anna Nicole Smith – This is the kind of information that fills our airways. And although we try as hard as we can to keep the movies with drugs and alcohol out of our high definition televisions, we can not continue talking about the news channels most recent adventures Lindsay Lohan's away.
What to do? There is no real answer. We do not live in a perfect world. Unfortunately, all media is nonprofit based, even that which is intended to inform without bias. News bigwigs know that sensation sells, and that as much as the war in Afghanistan and of public health care, reform, which will not attract as many viewers as a story about the possible causes of the death of Michael Jackson.
The best solutions are the least technology. Watch TV with your children whenever possible. If you can not participate directly in the TV, make a conscious effort at least around here. Talk to your kids about what they see on television and what they think and feel about what is happening. Be sure to discuss issues important, and encourage kids to read the newspaper. At day's end, children are much more influenced by their parents from a satellite TV, so confident that you will be able to make a difference.
