The iPhone has been designed to work GPRS, EDGE and Wi-Fi networks, but does not include 3G support. Apple has stated that it has to do with power requirements of the 3G chip.
EDGE provides higher download speeds 2G network and GPRS (2.5G) but less than what can be achieved with Wi-Fi and 3G. and has set 2.75g.
The EDGE network coverage worldwide is very low, some of only places actually 10s percent. And the numbers are disappointing and not good news for iPhone users.
Trying to talk up the iPhone and Wi-Fi compatibility of their agreements free access point are not doing the trick.
EDGE is the current standard for data on GSM networks. GSM is a direct rival to CDMA. In the U.S., Cingular is the largest GSM provider.
EDGE offers services valued at around quarter Mb / sec. That's about twice the speed of ISDN (.128 MB / sec), but significantly slower than even the slowest DSL offerings (.3 up to 1.5 Mbps / sec), and a fraction of the output of 802.11b WiFi (typical: 6.5 Mbps sec).
EDGE is much faster than GPRS or dial-up networking age however (both are approximately 03 Mb / sec), so while not EDGE capable iChat videoconferencing bear style, is quite useful for browsing websites, receiving emails HTML and web service support other features shown on the iPhone, and Google Maps.
