Although the history of the Yorkshire Terrier is incomplete, there is much known about the origins of this breed exceptionally vibrant. The Yorkshire Terrier or Yorkie for short, is its humble beginnings in northern England in the counties of Yorkshire, Manchester and Leeds, during the years before 1750.
During this time, the initiation of the Industrial Revolution gave rise to small communities around the coal mines, textile mills and factories. The people of these areas originally made their living from the land and the turmoil experienced during the Industrial Revolution. Many had to learn new ways of life to continue supporting their families. These families persevering, many from as far afield as Scotland, attention to small communities in the making to start a new life.
Along with this group Hardy arrived immigrants equally resistant pets and companions. During the 19th century, weavers began to arrive in Scotland and brought with them the sturdy Scottish Terrier. Far from being a simple blood line, the Scottish Terrier has been attributed to the creation of different types of terriers, including the Yorkshire Terrier.
Part of the Scottish Terrier bloodlines later became the breed now known as Skye, Scottish Terrier, West Highland White Terrier and the last call of their separation, Cairn Terrier.
The Scottish Terrier is also known that in Argyle or the Isle of Skye. It is a bluish color and was also known as a fracture or flat Scots hair depending on the length of the jacket he had.
There is every possibility that they were the forerunners of modern Skye Terrier. Other breeds that have claim Yorkie's ancestral are the Paisley and Clydesdale Terriers and party hair Scotch Terrier.
All these races in Scotland, along with other English, were working dogs, used to keep under the control of parasites in the coal mines and factories.
In an effort to produce dogs with exceptional ability in catching mice and rats, the common men of the day breed only smaller, faster and better ratters the group. These men were not out to produce one race, the sophisticated dog breed, but wanted the best dogs to keep mice away. This is the reason not kept a record of what breeds were mixed to create the Yorkshire Terrier.
The best guess is that the miners in the Yorkshire breed the Black and Tan Terrier English with the many breeds of terriers Scots. He even believes that Malta can be launched somewhere. The resulting Terriers were crossed with the types, perhaps once again of other terriers, such as the Welsh Terrier.
In late 1800, the first written records about the ancestors of the modern Yorkshire Terrier began to appear. Most of these were written by educated rich men who had traveled to Yorkshire and saw the intelligent, courageous dogs chasing their prey.
Rawdon B. Lee, speaking in Yorkshire Terrier in "Modern Dogs says:" How the name of Scotch Terrier dog is attached to so thoroughly had its home in Yorkshire and Lancashire is somewhat difficult to determine, where identifiable at all, but a very old breeder of the variety told me that the first of which came from Scotland, where there had been accidentally from a cross between silk-coated Skye (the Clydesdale) and black and tan terrier. He could hardly expect a nice dog, participating in a degree of both their parents, could be produced from a smooth-coated dog, a bitch long coated or vice versa.
Perhaps two or three animals of race that had been noted by some Paisley weavers in Yorkshire, where he duly admired, pains were taken to perpetuate the strain. "
So at the turn of the century, Mr. James Watson says in the book "Dog", that the origins of the Yorkshire Terrier pedigree dating back 60 years. Before that time, there were two kinds of records Terriers, Rough and Broken hair. In 1866 Broken haired Scotch Terriers were registered as not exceeding 5 pounds. They were later registered as Yorkshire Terriers in 1874.
From the official recognition of the Yorkshire breed, there have been many famous beloved Yorkies. And today, this race is getting new attention as more and more people are using this lovely breed for the company.
