Today I was buying a vacuum sealer. Of course I was interested in a cheap source of stock for them. The units themselves were not too bad, but the price of spare parts is outrageous. The work rolls to about a dollar per meter of fabric, which got me thinking how much would that save by buying negotiation packages meats and still come out.
Buck foot seems high, but not cheap. You can reuse however. I cut the bags a few inches longer than was necessary. When cut open, you lose about an inch so you can use them to something smaller when they are too short for a roast.
Regular washing with liquid soap, rinse, then put in a bottle to dry. Or put them in the dishwasher upside down.
Black and Decker FreshGuard was significantly less expensive than the others. It has a hose port and was very cheap – the equivalent of at least two more times. I hope that does not mean that this model is made cheaply and miserable. It works, but requires that you sit and hold the bar down until the end, while I realized that some the others are a function of the press and freedom. Hopefully the accessories are interchangeable!
However, someone also mentioned that the rolls of Plastic bags are expensive. So the final review. My impression is that the units were a sealant for computer printers, sold cheap so they can get that spare parts. I was surprised by the price of spare rolls. Between the cost of the unit and the cost of spare parts, I wonder if there will be any savings.
My first was a sealer Foodsaver (Tilia) and that itself is now a B & D (Black & Decker). Although they say you can use "most bags of other manufacturers, "found the Tilia bags gallon – 1 / 2 inches GREAT and not easily usable.
Comparison of the 2 machines, my vote would go to the Tilia general, but was faster and the bags seemed to be sealed better. My B & D has problems with larger bags of their own. They just do not seal well.
Be careful not to suck a lot, try not to get any liquid to the vacuum port. That's what nearly killed my Tilia and wanted a repair rate only at him. So I bought the B & D.
Why not take a regular ziplock bag, and cut Part of the rack, put the food on it, then seal it with the machine .. would that work?
Not good. The ziplocks are soft. The Tilia bags are manufactured with microscopic ridges that are compressed, and serve as air channels to allow the vacuum pump to suck all the air in the entire volume. You can still be trapped air with a ziplock.
What I would like to know is, how much can you pull the vacuum? If you pull 29 inches of Hg or more, I buy it for rescue wine that had entered the second fermentation (soft red wine is horrible, but if you can remove the effervescence, it is often better than the original restored).
