The Nintendo DS is an amazing gaming machine that provides a single interface and an impressive variety of games and a stylish compact design to meet all portable gaming needs. The introduction of flash memory cards for the DS has opened a world of new uses for Nintendo's flagship portable, which allows you to run homebrew games and applications.
This introduction allows you to play MP3 files, watch movies, play games from older consoles through emulator, and play backups of your game ROMs.
The R4 and M3 DS Simply represent the latest in the development of flash memory cards based on the DS. The two cards are essentially the same and differ only in name, both the use of microSD memory cards and connection in slot 1 (the DS game slot). Both drag and drop support for ROMs and Homebrew (ie Fiddly no patching of the files, literally copy the files to the micro SD card) and have a easy to use interface built by default moon, allowing playback of MP3 files and movie files. Both can be used without dangerous mods do to the system or use buggy pass cartridges.
The following are cool 4 things you can do with your DS with the R4 or M3 DS Simply.
1. Play files ROM backup – Contrary to popular belief, flash memory cards for the DS is not just to play pirated games (although it is certainly possible and is a matter of personal ethics whether you do or not) and can be used in a variety of legal forms. Make backup ROMs of games you own the R4 or Simply DS is a great way to make your DS even more portable, as it will not have to carry your cartridges with you. This is also a great choice if you have children small, which can easily lose the little DS cartridges.
2. Play MP3 files and videos – By using the excellent program of Moon (which comes bundled with the R4 and M3 DS Simply) you can turn your DS into a portable media player, able to play MP3s and DPG movie files. This is great for those like me who previously walked around with bulging pockets trying to carry my DS, iPod, phone and PDA. A set of headphones gives sound quality rivaling iPod for MP3 playback, and the DS Lite is super bright, high resolution screen which is ideal for episodes of The Simpsons on the train. Moonshell play files MP3 natively, and a small free-to-download application called DPG Converter quickly and easily convert your movies and programs to format Moon DPG.
3. Turn your DS into a PDA – DSOrganize Using the excellent homebrew program, you can turn your DS into a full featured PDA, using the input through the touch screen. Among its many features includes a scheduler, calendar, notes, reminders and drawing application, and my favorite of all uses of DS Homebrew, the ability to play Internet radio streams via the DS WiFi.
4. Run homebrew – Homebrew software, which is a software created by programmers and fans for the sole purpose of experimenting with the system, has soared since the launch of the new and easy-R4 and M3 DS simply. Ranging from simple games to complete a full application, there is a universe of homebrew available for free download from the Internet. Some of the latest software allows wonderful new uses for the DS, such as using the DS as a VOIP phone (through the integrated microphone), a detector wifi access point, web browser and software mentioned DSOrganize PDA. There are a series of emulator programs that allow you to play games from NES, SNES, Game Boy, Sega Master System and Sega Genesis.
