Cartridge-based games have two pieces of metal make physical contact with others, to carry the signal between the game and the console. This is why innert accumulation of material, such as dust, in the contact points act as a physical barrier preventing the game and the system of communication with others. The age of the game, the more likely that this problem occurs.
Otherwise, the cartridge-based games are incredibly resilient and tend not to fail for any other reason, if the cartridge appears to be in good shape is almost certain to work once clean.
What you need:
- 70-95% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol
- Q-Tips
- 2 minutes
On the bottom of the cartridge (the part that is inserted into the console) you will notice is a circuit board in the center with small strips of metal on both sides. Apply the alcohol to a Q-Tip (2-3 bunches from side to side tends to be more efficient) and clean both sides of the board. Alcohol evaporates very quickly so do not be afraid to have contacts too wet, a little more real break up any debris faster and accelerate the process. What you're trying to do is to polish the metal contacts, so continue to vigorously swab each side until the Q-Tips are no longer stained black or gray. Replace Q-Tips, as it is soiled or if they start to break. Once the Q-Tips does not come out dirty and must wait a moment that any remaining alcohol evaporates Board. Take a clean, dry Q-Tip and vigorously scratch on each side of the Board, if it comes out clean you're done!
