MOLLE began when the Defense Department began looking to replace the ALICE (All-Purpose Lightweight Individual equipment) Pack in 1994. MOLLE is an acronym for Modular Light-load transport of equipment. Used to define the current generation of load backpacks, jackets and accessories used by Marines and soldiers. The modularity of system derives from the use of PALS (Bag Attachment Ladder System) webbing, rows of heavy nylon stitched onto the vest or bag to allow binding of more bags MOLLE Compatible accessory. This method of fixation has become the standard for modular tactical teams in place of stick and click on the system used in the first modular systems. MOLLE Gear is manufactured by various companies such as Blackhawk, Blackwater Gear, Armor Holdings and others.
The term is used molle not only to describe the specific system, but has become a generic description for all load bearing systems and subsystems that use peer fabric straps for modular pouch attachment. Most systems can be used interchangeably molle and PAL. Any system that uses modular methods of fixation and can MOLLE components used with the general theme of U.S. is often considered "MOLLE compatible" or called a "MOLLE" system. More and more military and non-military MOLLE manufacturers are incorporating technology in the outdoor equipment.
