I was skeptical at first that Nintendo would be able to recreate the fun of the original game without radically altering the basic elements of what has made the game so great. The original Punch-Out! had a little repetitive game, but there was a ton of fun there to determine how to KO fighters that the experience was memorable.
I was concerned that the direct translation of elements of the original game play the Wii without modification would result in an experience repetitive and shallow. I am glad that I was wrong. There is more depth and strategy for this remake than meets the eye, and 2-player mode, exhibition matches and challenges add multiple levels of replay value.
Strategy base level is the same as the original – you are Little Mac, a scrappy boxer fighting his way through the minor and major world circuit. Finally, you can take the title and the fight to defend it. As you fight different characters, you get to see the cut-scene for the next opponent. Cut-scenes and content to unlock other then become visible in the gallery.
The Wii is expanding the original Punch-Out! including challenges different "that you can do during exhibition games. Example challenges include KO ING opponent with 6 punches in one match, find opponents "weak spot" and killing with one shot, win a game without ducking / dodging / blocking, etc. I will not spoil while saying what happens when you complete a challenge, but they add lots of replay value after you have stitched and uppercut your way through the circuit world. The exhibition games are also great for practicing against an opponent without affecting your rank, the career mode will follow your gain or losses.
The original characters are more charming than you remember and the "celluloid" style (not sure if this is the correct term) of the animation is interesting, and makes use of the somewhat limited graphics of the Wii ( "limited" compared to the 360/PS3). You will not even notice that the Wii is not paying zillions of polygons and textures than a minute because the cut scenes and the ways that characters are more fun to watch.
Parents should note that even if this is a boxing game, "violence" is quite funny and there is no blood or malice. Overall, this is a must-have for fans of fans of the first and the Wii looking for a solid gaming experience.
