The new HDTV can be used not only to find traditional television content on cable, satellite, terrestrial broadcasting and record players optical, but also multimedia content from other devices. These may be your game console like the PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, or your personal computer. This is the reason that new HDTV sets now have multiple inputs and multimedia functions to meet needs.
Game Consoles
HDMI output is standard on almost all new games consoles except the Wii, which came with its own component video cable. TV manufacturers complemented this by equipping their sets with preset picture as "game" or "Sports" specially configured for video games. Most games are produced in widescreen 480p or 720p, with some even do 1080i. Older versions of these consoles come with analog outputs only. To contact your new HDTV, use the S-video or component video connections for improved picture quality.
Sony PlayStation 3 or PS3 has HDMI output that supports 16:9 high definition video and its Blu-ray drive can also be used to play movie titles. Micrososoft Xbox 360 allows users to download games, game demos, trailers, television shows and movies. This console is compatible with all games in high definition 16:9. You can also play DVD at 480p without any additional hardware, and also has an option for HD DVD playback (discontinued due to defeat in war with Blu-ray). Nintendo came up with the Wii, but opted to concentrate on the game experience rather than the complement of the features that Microsoft and Sony included in their game consoles. Wii does not have an exit HDMI, but came up with a component video cable that lets you connect to the system console to an HDTV to view 16:9 widescreen or 480p progressive output. Also is not independent of DVD or Blu-ray and PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Personal Computers
New models of personal computers, Macintosh or Windows, now have the DVI interface, the digital version of VGA. This is a type of connection inputs without the video signals from the computer display device. Since no compression is used, no loss of image quality when the source signal is displayed on the monitor. If your HDTV has DVI input, you need a DVI-to-HDMI adapter cable, which is usually available at electronics stores.
Now we are seeing a new trend in the home where the family members converge on the living room with a large HDTV set to watch movies or television programs, surf the web or play their favorite video games. Television has certainly evolved from traditional television into a multimedia need. So before buying a new HDTV, see to it that has the right connections and necessary characteristics for its new multimedia devices.
