In the world of business today, trust is hard won, easily lost and once lost, is difficult if not impossible to recover. The growing skepticism consumer is sending business owners and managers a clear message that organizations must retain the confidence of its customers, employees, suppliers and communities if they want to succeed and have the integrity required.
"I want a successful business and have to be able to live with myself, at the same time "Says JK Harris, author of the flash-point, seven major strategies for Rapid Fire-Growth Business (Entrepreneur Press) and founder and chief Officer of JK Harris & Company. "For me, the only way to do both is to operate ethically and fairly."
Is the success without the integrity possible? That depends on how you define success. If your goal is strictly to make money and you're out of money fast, integrity can not be an element essential to its operation. But if your vision is a strong organization with a stable future, the opposite is true. "You may be able to cheat your way to profits short term, but not if you want the long-term success, "says Harris.
Business owners, managers and employees face daily dilemmas ethics for which there is often no easy answers. Complicating the problem is that not all companies competing with adhere to the same standards.
It's a good idea to articulate the company's values and ethics in a political statement, and use that statement as much as an operations guide and a tool marketing. A clear statement removes any doubt as to what is considered right and wrong.
To help resolve ethical dilemmas, keep your decision to the glare of publicity. How would you feel if your actions are recorded on the first page of the newspaper? If the idea makes you cringe, the action you are thinking is probably a mistake.
When it comes to their employees, be prepared to deal swiftly and decisively with any violation of the declaration of its values, but its character of action understanding. Consider the true motivation behind the behavior when decide what action to take. Behavior was thought-out and deliberate person, or was trying to do the right thing and made a mistake in the process? For the first, which is probably someone who does not want in your business. In the latter case, some counseling and education must keep the situation from happening again.
When your organization does experience a lack of ethics, not the end of the world, recovery is possible. Start by admitting what you have done to parties concerned. Take responsibility, then immediately launched a plan to correct the situation.
Of course, you can not be fully able to repair damage. It could be like a marriage where infidelity has occurred: the relationship can survive, but will never be exactly the same. Rebuilding trust takes time and effort, something to consider before taking an ethical risk.
In his Flashpoint book, JK Harris writes: "Every industry, every company is full of ethical choices. This is part of the circumstances that have to learn to deal with life. In my early years, I made some bad decisions. Today, not waste time regretting, but I will not repeat them. I will not compromise my ideals and beliefs for any company or any amount of money. And I recommend that you take the same position. You can not make much money, his company could not get that big, but still can be profitable and grow, and you can sleep at night, deep in his own bed instead of a prison cell. To me that is worth everything. "
