It is rumored that in 1967 an old lady in London, was found beaten in a Rolls-Royce with his umbrella while shouting "Pig, pig, how dare you to do this to a Rolls-Royce? "Although one might think that would have been arrested and the owner would have charged, but this never happened. The owner just laughed.
The owner in question was John Lennon, of Beatles fame. Lennon bought a Phantom V, which were manufactured by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited, Crewe, Cheshire, England. The chassis has been fitted with a limousine body built by Park Ward Mulltner. Valentine was finished in Black. The number plate was FBJ111C. The car was 19 feet long and weighing three tonnes.
Lennon immediately began to make changes in the vehicle. He settled a radio-telephone, a stereo system, a Sony TV and a refrigerator. Then he changed the rear seat so it could become a bed. In 1966, when John I had to go to Spain to film "How I Won the War" which had both sent their car and driver through. At that time the car including all metal finishes, had been repainted a black matte.
However, John got bored with the black and in 1967 visited JP Fallon Ltd. a company bodies located in Chertsey, Surrey, England. There he discussed the idea of the psychedelic paint car. Fallon, agreed to this and hired a Dutch team Roma artists, known as El Loco, to do the job. They painted the car bright yellow overall, and then designed and painted scroll pattern and flowers in green, blue, orange and red on yellow background. John paid £ 2,000 for the work.
The Beatles used the V phantom from 1966 to 1969. In 1970, John and Yoko Ono sends the car to the United States, however, rarely used in the United States. Several rock stars like the Rolling Stones, the Moody Blues and Bob Dylan provided. Finally, are placed in storage in New York. However, when John and Yoko got in trouble with the U.S. Internal revenue in 1977, donated the car to the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York, and received a tax credit of $ 225,000.
The museum put on public display for about four months, but had to return to storage since they could not afford the insurance coverage for public viewing.
Finally, in 1985, Cooper-Hewitt sold the car through an auction $ 2,299,000 to Ripley by Mr. Jim Pattison's International Inc., for exhibition in "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" museum.
In 1986, Mr. Pattison, who was president of the Expo '86 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, ready to take the car shown at the Expo.
In 1987, was presented as a gift to Her Majesty in the province of British Columbia and placed on display at the Museum of Transportation of British Columbia, in Cloverdale.
He was then sent to the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, British Columbia to show occasionally.
On 9 March 1996 moved to National Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa. Here is a sculpture of John as a passenger, made by Joanne Sullivan.
